Rafael Retana-Torres
Rafael Retana-Torres (he/they) is a queer, film photographer currently based in San Francisco. First gaining an interest in photography as a means of capturing moments with his friends, he quickly realized he was creating an archival body of work of a very sparsely documented community.
Rafael photographs the underground transgender community that has formed around the historically queer San Francisco Bay Area. Whether in seedier moments --at leather bars and renegade events-- or times of intimate connection --like skinny dipping with loved ones at the Yuba River-- Rafael aims to record the singular energy that permeates radically queer spaces.
Rafael is currently living in the Mission District with his partner and their 2 cats.
